A friend asked me to carve the upoko and arero (head and tongue) of this taiaha, and I was excited to take it on. I carved the pakati haehae surface design onto it, as it is my favourite pattern to carve, and I wanted to try something distinct from how they usually look. While I don’t usually carve traditional weapons, I really wanted to give this one a go, and both sides are carved completely identical.
